What Are Mood Disorders?

A mood d/o is a psychological d/o involving either periods of extremely sad, low-energy moods or swings between extremely high mood and extremely low moods. There are two classes of mood d/o that you will be responsible for: depressive disorders & bipolar disorders.

Depressive disorders involve the presence of a mood d/o in which the individual feels so sad and has so little energy that the individual cannot function effectively.

There are two depressive disorders you are responsible for from your text: major depressive d/o and dysthymic d/o. The symptoms of dysthymic d/o are not as severe as those of major depressive d/o.

A bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which the individual alternates between periods of depression and mania. Mania is a mood in which the individual feels highly energetic and euphoric.

Of the bipolar disorders you are responsible for from your text, there are: bipolar I d/o, bipolar II d/o, and cyclothymia. In bipolar II, the mania experienced by the individual is not as severe as in bipolar I. In cyclothymia, the mania and depressive symptoms are not as severe as those experienced in major depressive d/o or bipolar I d/o.
