Freudian Personality Theory At a Glance
Help! I don't get this Freudian business! Well, here's a quick lil' review of good ole' psychoanalytic personality theory for you. Remember, of course, to consult your text & your notes. This is purely supplemental.
Structure of Personality
- Id-
present at birth, entirely unconsious, reservoir of psychological engeries & instincts. Hold life instincts and death instincts. Operates according to the pleasure principle
- Ego
- second system to emerge. Conscious, referee btw the needs of the id & the demands of society & the superego. Operates according to the reality principle - represents reason & good sense.
- Superego
- last part of personality to develop - unconscious - represents morality. Made up of ego ideal (moral & social standards that you learn are right) and conscience (inner voice that says you did something wrong) - The Jimmeny Cricket on your shoulder.
- Defense mechanisms
- used by ego to relieve anxiety; distort reality. Anxiety comes in two forms: neurotic (id) and moral (superego).
Psychosexual Stages
- Oral
- birth to 1 year - mouth is focus of sensation; fixation at this stage results in adults who are constantly seeking oral gratification (smokers, really sarcastic folk)
- Anal
stage - 1-3; major issue at this stage is control of bodily wastes - fixation at this stage results in people who are obsessive about neatness or cleanliness (anal retentive) or ppl who are messy & disorganized (anal expulsive)
- Phallic
stage - 3-6; sexual sensation located in the genitals. Oedipus/Electra conflict emerges and is resolved via identification w/ same sex parent and repression of desire for opposite sex parent
- Latency
stage - 6 to puberty; dormant stage, nothing much going on here!
- Genital
stage - from puberty on - beginning of mature sexuality. Sexual energy is located in the genitals. Learn to form adult relationships here.
Levels of Awareness
Conscious - you're aware of it - the tip of the iceberg above water
Preconscious - you're not aware of it, but you could be (hey - what did you eat for supper?) - that part of the iceberg just below the surface that you can see, but it's fuzzy sometimes.
Unconscious - you're not aware of it - the bottom of the iceberg
