Somatoform Disorders
Somatoform d/o center on the person's relationship w/ his or her own body. There are relatively rare bodily symptoms and/or complaints of bodily symptoms for which no physiological basis can be found.
- Pain disorder
- people experience pain that cannot be attributed to any physical cause
- Conversion d/o
- the sensory or muscular systems are impaired despite the lack of a known physical cause. The impairment may involve partial or complete paralysis of the arms or legs; seizures; coordination problems; loss or impairment of sensations; insensitivity to pain; inability to see, hear or speak; or prickly, tingling, or creeping sensations on the skin.
- Somatization d/o
- ppl seek relief from unpleasant chronic physical symptoms for which there is no known physical cause. Of the many symptoms that may arise, some of the common ones are dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and weakness. Somatization d/o differs from malingering - faking symptoms on purpose in order to get out of responsibilities
- Hypochondriasis
- people are preoccupied w/ the fear that they may have serious illnesses and overreact to ordinary physical experiences, such as nausea or pain in the abdomen.
